Bundala National Park

Bundala National Park, Sri Lanka's first Ramsar wetland, is a complex of coastal lagoons and dunes supporting incredible biodiversity.

Native Flora

The park contains specialized coastal vegetation including salt-tolerant species like Prosopis juliflora and Salvadora persica. The thorny scrubland features endemic plants adapted to arid conditions. Mangrove species line the lagoons, providing crucial habitat for aquatic species.

Wildlife

Bundala hosts over 200 bird species including winter migrants like greater flamingo and black-tailed godwit. The park supports all six species of Sri Lankan reptiles including marsh crocodiles and five species of sea turtles that nest on its beaches. Notable mammals include elephants and fishing cats.

Visitor Guide

Visit the Bundala Lagoon, explore the interpretive center, and walk the nature trails. The park offers bird observation hides, photographic opportunities at the salt pans, and guided tours to turtle nesting sites. The ancient Kirinda Temple provides panoramic views of the coastline.
